Profile

Melrose Primary School is one of four “urban” government primary schools located in the rural city of Wodonga, Victoria, 300kms north of Melbourne on the Murray River. The “rural city” of Wodonga has a population of over 35 000 and is a town of industry and significant growth.  Melrose Primary is central and is close to the majority of parks and sporting facilities in the town including the Leisure Centre with gym and indoor pool, hockey centre, shopping centre, public transport, wetlands and playgrounds.  The majority of students walk to school or come by private transport. A small number of students travel by bus to school.

Background
Completed in January 1979, the school is a product of an innovative and spacious design. It is set in an attractive and open physical environment, fully carpeted and air conditioned in both summer and winter. Student displays throughout the school enhance the learning environment.

The main building provides for flexibility in teaching and learning through the generous provision of open areas and separate access to all rooms from the shelter of verandas. The spacious learning areas are positioned around a central service complex which consists of an art resource centre, a fully computerised library which operates on the ground and mezzanine floor levels, a multi purpose room, student kitchen, staff room, facilities and meeting rooms. Additions to the main complex are an Early Years training room and a music room. All students have access to the Internet via a computer network and interactive television via satellite. The school has disabled access.  All classrooms contain electronic whiteboards for interactive learning.

Classes
Students are grouped into classes of approximately 27 children in years 3 to 6, while Prep, year 1 and 2 classes are smaller, with approximately 21 children.  The school has straight grade preps and composite classes from grades 1-6. These groupings maximise flexibility in learning, encourage leadership opportunities at all levels and allow children to work to their level. Our teaching staff and integration aides, approach their job in a professional manner and are committed to providing the children in their care with a quality education.
