Our Journey

Melrose have long established the pursuit of academic excellence as a school charter priority. In 2004 we began to realise that academic excellence could further be achieved if our school curriculum included social emotional learning. Our students demonstrated a need in the areas of empathy, self-control, self awareness, motivation and managing relationships.

These skills are the pillars of emotional intelligence and are credited with being essential foundations for success in life.

In January 2005 all teachers began teaching EQ formally as part of their core program 4 days a week, one hour a day. Through work with the action team, ongoing reflection days and curriculum meetings, the staff at Melrose developed a wholeschool EQ action plan. From this, Educating Hearts & Minds was created.
